Delta Wanderings XV "Part II" – August 2015 -- “Big Cat Poker Run" -- "Throngs Line the Levee”
Heavy smoke and haze from north bay fires blanketed the Delta this morning as throngs of spectators made their way down the main channel levee towards the Discovery Bay Lighthouse. Dozens and dozens of boats of all sizes and shapes jockeyed for position near the entrance to Discovery Bay as speakers on shore blasted classic rock & roll. Then shortly before 10am the music was replaced by a voice announcing the Boats have left the dock. This marked the beginning of the 2015 Big Cat Poker Run as several dozen rumbling power boats made their way down the main channel through the haze. When they reached fast water the Poker Run participants had a virtual obstacle course to maneuver thru before they could put the petal to the metal and let the horses out as they sped their way to the Pittsburg Yacht Club the first stop on the Run. Wow, I no idea this was happening. Those boats look so cool! I heard the engines fire up when I got home from my graveyard shift. I knew they sounded quite a bit more powerful than what I usually hear on the water, but I never see them as my place is on the wrong side of Discovery Bay Blvd. On that note, I'm having a two-for-one sale on soft balls, fresh from my back yard:)
